Salary: $106,000 - $180,000

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for one or more Lamont Research Assistant, Associate or Professor positions with expertise in fundamental research on basic earth sciences, and the demonstrated ability to apply this expertise to topics in the broad field of earth resources.
For example, basic science expertise could include research on thermodynamics and kinetics of water/rock reaction, dynamics of subsurface fluid transport, chemical and physical processes of rock fracture, solid earth geophysics, remote sensing, or similar fields. This expertise should be coupled with an established record of applying this knowledge to resource exploration (onland or at sea), extraction of materials critical to the economy (currently, most urgently, materials needed for the clean energy transition and for fertilizer), sustainable sources of fresh water, natural and applied greenhouse gas capture and storage, geologic aspects of low-carbon energy sources (geothermal, geologic hydrogen production and extraction, etc.), environmental impacts of resource extraction, and/or similar applications.
In addition to Lamont, Columbia University hosts many scientists, engineers and policy specialists working on related topics, including the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences in the School of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Earth & Environmental Engineering - and several others - in the School of Engineering & Applied Science, the Climate School, the Global Center for Energy Policy, and the School of International and Public Affairs, all offering many opportunities for synergistic research collaboration.
The selection committee is interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their excellence in research and service, to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. The successful candidate will join a world-class community of researchers with opportunities for transdisciplinary collaborations with other scholars in fields across Columbia University.
Lamont Research Professors receive nine-month appointments with partial salary support provided from institutional sources. An incentive program encourages the establishment of a vigorous externally funded research program to provide a majority of their salary support and includes opportunities for summer salary. The successful applicant will also be eligible to apply for additional internal sources of salary support and research funds. Applicants should have a clear vision of their intended research program; demonstrate a record of significant research contributions through publications in peer-reviewed journals; demonstrate likely or proven success in raising external funding; and be able to contribute broadly to research at Lamont.
Eligibility requirements include a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Physical Geography, or a related field and at least two years of relevant research experience.
Candidates should provide a CV (including a list of publications and of funded projects and grant applications awaiting approval), a statement of research interests that begins with a brief statement (max 5 sentences) on the impact to the field of their top two publications, a statement of science education and outreach interests, and the names and addresses of at least three references.
The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will remain open until the position is filled.
Columbia University benefits accompany this Officer of Research appointment.

Since our founding in 1949, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory has been a leader in the Earth sciences, with many scientific firsts. We study the planet from its deepest interior to the outer reaches of its atmosphere, on every continent and in every ocean, providing a rational basis for the difficult choices facing humanity.
