Talon Metals Corp is actively seeking a motivated early to mid-career Geochemist to join the Tamarack Team, an innovative group of mining industry professionals developing a high-grade nickel and copper deposit in Aitkin County, Minnesota. The successful candidate will work closely with MineraLogic LLC, a specialty geochemistry consultancy with a mission to provide a geochemically-sound strategy for the mining industry and create value through impact—toward the success of their clients, society, and disciplines. This position is a unique professional opportunity to work with the scientists at an active environmental consultancy and with the project engineers, scientists, and managers at a proposed next-generation nickel mine, currently in exploration and development. We are looking for someone to bring their talents, training, and solutions-oriented focus to work as a valued and respected member of our multidisciplinary team as we advance the project. Our goal is to develop expertise so that Talon can manage future characterization and geochemical issues in-house. Talon has an established and robust safety culture where all employees and contractors are expected to contribute to the goal of an injury and illness-free workplace. Candidate must have a willingness and demonstrated ability to always work safely, follow existing safe work procedures and policies, and demonstrate safe working habits and values to coworkers and contractors.
What the Role Entails
The successful candidate will work with the geochemistry team initially supporting the material characterization program and the associated geochemical modeling, which are critical components of the federal and state environmental review process; as this is achieved, the focus will shift towards assisting with the evaluation of baseline water quality, permitting and interpretation of regulations and permit requirements for applicability and subsequent translation into activities, guidance, programs, and oversight to ensure site compliance. In addition, the scope of the position necessitates attention to detail, capability to manage multiple and competing objectives, self-leadership, curiosity, and the ability to influence, communicate and work effectively with a diverse group of internal and external parties.
Key Responsibilities
• Serving as a general mining geochemist.
• Designing, implementing and interpreting geochemical characterization programs.
• Managing technical programs, including site investigations.
• Collection and management of samples for characterization.
• Coordinating with analytical laboratories.
• Communication with the environmental team, regulatory agencies, and the public.
• Reviewing of technical work products.
• Provide ideas for innovative environmentally responsible mine development.
Qualifications
• A bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geochemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related field; an advanced
degree would be beneficial.
• Preferably 5 years of professional experience, including successfully managing mining and/or engineering projects.
Prior experience working on a mine site and/or with mine development would be beneficial.
• OR an advanced degree and academic experience
• Familiarity, through experience and/or coursework, with:
o Material characterization tools, strategies, analytical methods, and environmental regulations.
o The minerals and geochemical processes that influence water chemistry in the environment.
o Statistical methods of evaluation. Experience with R programming language preferred.
In addition to the qualifications above, a successful candidate will be an excellent communicator. Writing samples may be requested.
This position will be initially based primarily in Duluth, MN, with regular—approximately weekly—trips to the project site, 50 miles to the west. Occasional additional travel may be required. Eventually, this position will be located on-site at Tamarack.
