The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking an experienced professional to lead the agency’s long-term planning for solid waste management, recycling and organic waste processing infrastructure in the role of Director of Waste Management Planning (“Director”). The Director will work report directly to the Deputy Commissioner for Solid Waste Management and will work collaboratively with the Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability and the Commissioner’s Office to develop and implement plans that advance the City’s sanitation priorities.DSNY is the nation’s largest municipal sanitation agency, collecting and sustainably managing more than 3.8 million tons of waste annually. DSNY has nearly 10,000 employees, over 100 garages, repair shops and transfer station facilities, and a fleet of 5,000 trucks, cars and other equipment. We keep New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice.In this role, you will coordinate infrastructure planning efforts related to the City’s next comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan, a 20-year plan due to be submitted to the City Council and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for approval by 2026. You will work closely with other agency stakeholders and City and private sector partners to develop plans that advances the City’s zero waste and climate goals while providing for resilient, reliable and efficient infrastructure to manage the City’s waste. This role will also oversee the development of new capacity to process organic waste from the City’s growing curbside collection programs, including the procurement of a next generation of organics processing and beneficial reuse contracts. This position will also work closely with the City’s recycling contractors to monitor recycling markets and industry trends and identify any potential new investments or technologies to improve recycling capture and sustainability. You will also advise the Department’s Bureau of Commercial Waste on policies and programs related to sustainable materials management in the commercial waste sector.The ideal candidate will have deep experience in the solid waste management or environmental services sectors with a track-record of developing and implementing long-term plans within a large organization. They will excel in working collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams and will be able to quickly learn and adapt to the complex regulatory and policy environment in New York City.
