The City of Olathe, Kansas is looking for a Solid Waste Manager to lead a team nationally recognized for excellence in service delivery.  The City's Solid Waste Division provides award winning solid waste services to its 143,000 residents including automated curbside trash and recycling to over 40,000 households and commercial service to over 800 Olathe businesses.  This leader will perform a wide variety of highly responsible, complex and diverse advanced level professionals duties involved in managing, planning, directing and promoting the activities and operations of the Solid Waste Division of the Infrastructure Department in providing an integrated solid waste management system for the City of Olathe.  

Knowledge of:

• Municipal Solid Waste operations and the political and environmental context in which the department operates. 
• Budget processes and analysis for both operating and capitol budgets.
• Concepts and current practices used in rate setting, cost recrovery and fiscal control.
• Regulations and standards from accredtied sources in the field, e.g., solid waste collection and disposal, recycling, landfill and transfer station operation, building and construction activities, fleet management, etc. 

Ability to:

• Think creatively in developing new and innovative approaches to operational effectiveness, financial management, budgeting, planning and ratemaking. 
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing on technical and nontechnical matters.  
• Maintain effective working relationships with the City Council, City Departments, Infrastructure Divisions, employees and the public.
• Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others. 

Supervises:  Direct supervision of Assistant Solid Waste Manager, 4 Solid Waste Supervisors and indirect supervision of 60+ Solid Waste staff.
