Metra’s Safety and Environmental Compliance Department is responsible for the implementation, oversight, and coordination of the agency’s passenger and employee safety programs which are designed to promote the safest travel and working environment possible. The department’s environmental compliance function includes inspection and testing for environmental safety (air quality, hazardous materials storage, etc.) at Metra-controlled facilities. The department also oversees environmental mitigation, employee training, and the agency’s hazardous waste disposal program. Reporting to the Department Head, Industrial Hygiene the HazMat Environmental Safety Specialist will coordinate hazardous materials program activities and operations to ensure Metra's compliance with mandated environmental regulations, oversee hazardous waste disposal and permitting, and coordinate response to hazardous material and other rail emergencies. The position will also conduct hazardous waste inspections and environment studies, review chemical purchase request, oversee Metra's compliance with underground and above ground storage tank requirements, and conduct mandated environmental training to all Metra employees. In addition, the position will maintain records of hazardous waste disposals and environmental permitting and prepare related reports, serve as the hazardous materials liaison, and research and recommend program processes and procedures.
Coordinate the hazardous materials program operations and activities including the development of guidelines for hazardous waste disposal and recycling, inspection of Metra facilities, and compliance with federal and state regulatory agencies. Participate in the development and implementation of program goals, objectives, policies, and priorities. Coordinate response to hazardous material and other rail emergencies with contracted personnel, Metra staff, and government agencies. Review existing operations and plans for new operations to assess compliance with federal and state regulations; conduct monthly hazardous waste inspections; and recommend changes to ensure compliance. Review, analyze, and approve hazardous materials shipments and disposals for compliance with containment and quantity allotments; maintain records in Metra's EHS system; and complete environmental permit applications.
