There is a vacancy for a PhD position in the topic of hydrothermal organic geochemistry at the Department of Earth Science. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years.The position is financed by the Research Council of Norway’s FRINATEK project "HyPOD" (2019−2023; Project Manager: E. Reeves).
This PhD position aims to experimentally determine the types of organic molecules generated by pyrolysis of microbial or biological organic matter under hydrothermal conditions, and couple these data with novel measurements of low-molecular-weight organic molecules in collected hydrothermal fluid samples. The central objective of project HyPOD is to provide a fundamental framework for understanding diverse organics formed in hydrothermal fluids from diverse geologic settings, and enhance our understanding of the sub-seafloor processes that lead to the formation of molecules relevant for a putative hydrothermal origin of life. The successful candidate will have to assist in cultivation of hydrothermal microorganisms, perform hydrothermal experiments in the laboratory - measuring dissolved gases and their stable isotopes using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and investigate remnant biomarkers after the experiments. The research fellow will also integrate the experimental results with analogous measurements from fluid samples collected during cruises to the Mid-Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Mid-Ocean Ridges as part of the HyPOD team. Short research stays (for specialist analyses) with project partners in Germany (University of Oldenburg/Bremen) will also be expected.
The PhD will be hosted within the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research, which focuses on multidisciplinary research in Arctic deep-sea environments. The centre organizes yearly deep-sea expeditions to study Arctic mid-ocean ridges and hydrothermal vent fields. Additional international cruise opportunities will also be available. During these scientific cruises, data acquisition and sampling are carried out using modern undersea vehicles.
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years.
The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).
About the research training
As a PhD candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within two months after you have commenced in the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
