The University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks a dynamic director of Environmental Health and Safety. Department has 46 FTE positions and a $5.5M operating budget on an ocean-front campus hosting 25,000 students and 6 Nobel Laureates. Our award winning EH&S staff participate in approximately 10,000 inspections per year, train an average of 1,200 new researchers in lab safety, provide support to over 6,000 oceanic dives, perform more than 350 ergonomic evaluations, and complete over 400 inspection reports for lab safety with a 95% compliance rate. The team also designs strategies and processes that prepare the University to effectively respond to emergencies and planning for the restoration of University operations in the aftermath of an emergency.
The director is responsible for the leadership and development of environmental health and safety, emergency management, and risk management; for developing, implementing, managing, and continuously improving practices, policies, and programs that enhance the environmental health and safety of our faculty, staff, students, and public; mitigate risks, and meet changing regulatory demands; for the coordination of all risk management activities and supervision of the various campus insurance programs, including worker's compensation, to assure proper and adequate protection for the Regents, a reduction of losses, and adherence to established standards, policies, and legal requirements.
This position has a high degree of autonomy and must operate in a complex environment characterized by substantial change. The director is authorized to discontinue operation of any University function or activity when the director determines there is imminent danger to life or health.
Min Requirements: Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Minimum of ten years of experience managing professional/technical and administrative staff in the field of Environmental Health and Safety. Experience developing, implementing, and measuring the success of major programs in the field of Environmental Health and Safety. Demonstrated technical expertise in all Environmental Health and Safety areas managed.

Salary: Up to $200,000, Depending on Qualifications
