The City of Burlington is seeking a “roll up your sleeves and lead” Sanitation Superintendent to manage the Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department. The next Superintendent will be knowledgeable of the operations of solid waste and committed to both service excellence in the community as well as ensuring that division employees are led with clear expectations, accountability, support, approachability, optimism and positivity. Employees of this division engage with most every home in the community each week with high visibility and community expectations for customer service. The next Sanitation Superintendent will have a track record as an excellent and visionary team leader who can build relationships across units and work proactively with citizens and the community at large to ensure excellent service delivery. Position Overview: Reporting to the Director of Development and Technical Services, the Sanitation Superintendent plans, manages and oversees the activities and operations of the Sanitation Division including solid, yard and bulk waste collection, recycling collection, and quarterly electronic waste collection. This position will lead a team of over 20 employees and be responsible for a budget of $2.5M. The new Sanitation Superintendent must be able to perform complex operational analysis to identify and recommend policy revisions or other changes to improve operational effectiveness, efficiency, and accountability. Additionally, the Superintendent must work with other Public Works Divisions and City departments to ensure community expectations are met. Bachelor’s degree in environmental management, engineering, public or business administration, or a related field; supplemented by five years of increasingly responsible experience in Solid Waste management, public works operations, public administration, or a related field, including three years of administrative and supervisory responsibility managing solid waste collection and disposal programs. Solid Waste Association of North America (“SWANA”) certification; Engineering Technician certification; and/or Environmental Engineer certification are preferred. The selected candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a valid class C and B North Carolina commercial driver’s license.
