Plans, directs and reviews the work of a shift of wastewater plant operators; operates, inspects and performs routine preventive maintenance on a variety of primary, secondary and tertiary plant equipment, plant sampling and other activities related to continuous operation of a wastewater treatment plant. Performs professional level process control activities associated with wastewater treatment facilities. This includes the operation of the process laboratory, development and analysis of data to evaluate process efficiencies, and compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
This is the technical specialist class in the Wastewater Plant Operations series. Incumbents in this classification provide technical support, training, and direction to staff in a specialty area such as wastewater operations, maintenance, odor control, or resolving difficult system-related problems. Incumbents perform technical level process control activities, laboratory analysis, data input and evaluation, in conjunction with the CCWRD laboratory services. They are also responsible for making process changes throughout the facility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
The WRD Wastewater Plant Operations Specialist takes direction from the WRD Wastewater Plant Operations Supervisor and also consults with the WRD Assistant Manager. Incumbents are responsible for leading, and scheduling and evaluating the work a shift of skilled operators and technicians performs in plant operation, maintenance, process control, and other service activities. Incumbents lead, but do not normally directly supervise Operations staff. Incumbents work closely with the WRD Wastewater Plant Operations Supervisors to direct and evaluate staff.
Education and Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent AND four (4) years of full-time experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility, one (1) year of which was in a supervisory or lead capacity.
Working Conditions: Work day, evening, night, weekend, holiday shifts and standby. Work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations. Work with potential exposure to hazardous chemicals and substances found in the wastewater treatment process. Work out of doors in all weather conditions.
Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver's License at time of appointment. Must possess a valid Nevada Water Environment Association (NWEA) Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Grade IV Certificate, or candidate must possess a valid Plant Operator Grade IV Certificate, or equivalent, within another state. If a non-NWEA certification is held the candidate, within one year of hire, must obtain, either through reciprocity or test, a NWEA Plant Operator Grade IV Certificate.
Some positions may require confined space entry certification.
